The 14th to 16th Century remains of Melrose Abbey (4 miles down river from the original site of the abbey) are uniquely elegant. Some of the stone carvings are particularly well preserved. A small museum is on site and displays artefacts that have been found within this grand building. The abbey is also the burial place of a casket believed to contain the heart of Robert the Bruce.
