Lady Devorgilla of Galloway, dedicated to the memory of her husband John Balliol, founded Sweetheart Abbey in 1273. The abbey and church is still standing in most places and is remarkably well preserved despite being over seven hundred years old. The precinct wall is one of the most impressive architectural features, formed from large granite boulders. The site is managed by Historic Scotland.
