The parish church of Long Ashton rose with its patrons. As the lords of the manor prospered, they left their mark on the church. Thomas de Lyons improved the family fortunes by marrying a wealthy widow in 1371. He paid for the West tower. Sir Richard Choke bought the manor in 1454. As Lord Chief Justice, he was enormously wealthy. He was probably responsible for much of the present church, including the astonishingly fine gilded screen. He lies in an ornate tomb in the chapel he built for himself.
