Until 1989, Bryher was the only island in the Scillies lacking a low water landing place. In that year, an approach was made to Anneka Rice, the presenter of BBC1’s “Challenge Anneka” television series to provide a low water jetty for the island over a weekend. The result was this utilitarian but sturdily constructed quay on the east side of the island facing Tresco across the calm waters of New Grimsby Sound. As a result the sea communication with the island has been immensely improved giving a huge boost to the island’s economy which depends so much on tourist access.
