After Henry VIII closed England’s monasteries, he found a new use for Bristol’s great Abbey of St Augustine. In 1542 it became the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity. The new diocese found itself with only half a church. The wealthy abbey had been gradually rebuilding its church on magnificent lines, and was working on a new nave when it was closed. The nave was finally added in Victorian times. Don’t miss the fine Norman chapter house.
