This old almshouse was founded beside St Cuthbert’s Church by Bishop Bubwith. The good bishop never saw it, since it was built after his death in 1424, from the endowment he had left. It had lodgings for 12 pensioners with a chapel. Bishop John Still also left a bequest which funded 17th-century extensions, and another wing was added in 1884. Since the building still houses those in need, the interior is not open to the public.
