St Catherine’s greets the visitor with a flourish. The doors are exuberantly decorated with metalwork flowers and foliage. The church began life as a Norman chapel in the churchyard of the Cluniac priory of Montacute. It still has a Norman chancel arch, though the church was enlarged later in the Middle Ages and almost entirely rebuilt in Victorian times. You will find here the tombs of the Phelips family, owners of Montacute House, and the ornately carved pews that were once reserved for them.
