The parish church of Wells is one of the finest in Somerset. It was founded in the Saxon period, as the dedication to a Saxon saint suggests, but the present building is medieval. The place of worship for the Mayor and Corporation, it is appropriately grand, with a soaring tower and spacious body, flanked with aisles and chapels. Don’t miss the 16th-century ceiling, glowing with colour. It is lavishly decorated with angels, rosettes and shields.
