Countisbury is a small hamlet a mile east of Lynmouth at a height of about 1000 feet close to Foreland Point consisting of a church, a few cottages and a public house! The small church of St. John the Evangelist dominates this windswept spot. It is mentioned in records as early as 1292. The oldest surviving parts of the present day church are the chancel screen and the Perpendicular font which date from c.1700, many sections of the building having been rebuilt over the centuries. It boasts a 36’ high tower with a peal of three bells.
