The parish church of Axbridge has an astonishing ceiling. The present church was built around 1400, but the nave ceiling is a later elaboration. It was created in 1636 by a local craftsman, George Drayton. Made in plaster, it mimics the stone ribs and pendants of the vaulted ceilings to be found in cathedrals, but the effect is more of a fantasy castle. Don’t miss the incongruous monument to Anne Prowse; she kneels in severe black, surrounded by voluptuous mermaids.
