As Hugh Town grew to become the main town on St. Mary’s, this church was built to supersede St. Mary’s Old Town as the parish church of the island. The work began following the receipt of a gift of £1500 from King William IV in 1835 and the building was completed in 1838. It stands in a commanding position at the highest point of the town just below Buzza Hill.
