Tucked away behind the Theatre Royal is a Victorian landmark. When William Derry was mayor of Plymouth in 1862, he donated a clock to the town. The tower to house it stood proudly in a prominent spot at the junction of three of Plymouth’s busiest streets. It continued to stand as all around it was laid waste by German bombs. But as post-war redevelopment channelled the passing tides of humanity elsewhere, the clock tower was left stranded in what had become a backwater.
