Dunster Castle is situated atop a hill, overlooking the village. The approach is up a steep wooded walk to the 15th Century gatehouse. Beyond this is another gatehouse, the oldest remains of the original Norman castle. The Luttrell family were in possession in the late 14th Century but most of the medieval structure was destroyed in 1650 and renovated around 1680. Remodelling by Victorian architect, Anthony Salvin incorporated the Jacobean plasterwork and panelling. The future king, Charles II, is reputed to have slept here in 1645.
