This famous landmark rises dramatically above the Somerset Levels. From the top there are panoramic views all around. The stark tower at the summit is all that remains of the medieval Church of St Michael. In the Dark Ages the hill was a safe haven amid the marshes. Archaeologists found a 6th-century settlement there, perhaps a stronghold or a hermitage. The mystique of the place has bred a crop of romantic legends. The grain of truth in them may be that there was a Celtic Christian church here.
