This is the largest and best preserved of several mysterious underground tunnels that are associated with the numerous Iron Age settlements of this area of Cornwall. The word ‘fogous’ is derived from the Cornish language, meaning ‘cave’, and although a great many have been discovered in the area, no one is quite sure of the purpose of the tunnels. Popular guesses are refuges, storage chambers or ritual shrines.
