The Hardy Monument is dedicated to Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar, and a close associate of Horatio Nelson aboard HMS Victory. Situated atop a high chalk hill overlooking the English Channel the monument stands at seventy-two feet and visitors are able to climb the structure via an internal staircase. The monument was built by public subscription in 1844 and has been maintained by the National Trust since 1938.
