Lizard Lighthouse is the most southerly light on the UK mainland, guarding the treacherous rock-strewn areas of sea south of Lizard Point. It stands on a cliff 70 metres above high water. The first light was built in 1619 but soon closed after controversy over its funding. The current lighthouse complex was built in 1751 by Thomas Fonnereau and came under the aegis of Trinity House in 1771. It has remained largely unchanged since alterations in 1812. This was the last manned lighthouse in the South-west, being automated in 1998.
