Also known as St George’s Island, this half-mile wide island lies off Hannafore Point, southwest of Looe. It is possible to walk to the island during the lowest tides of the year. A medieval chapel was built on it, and there is a legend that as a child Jesus and his uncle Joseph of Arimathea visited when trading for tin. The Atkins sisters bought the island and lived on it for 40 years from 1964, it is now owned by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust which will maintain it as a nature reserve.
