Medieval hospitals were more like almshouses than today's hospitals. This one was founded by Glastonbury Abbey to house 10 poor men. The standard layout was followed: a long hall with a chapel at one end. Later the hall was converted into two rows of almshouses. By 1958 they were derelict and one row was demolished. The space has been planted as a garden. It makes a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the town, while the chapel - now dedicated to St Margaret - is used by free-thinking Anglicans.
