This outstanding Elizabethan house was built for Sir Edward Phelips, who was Speaker of the House of Commons. It retains many Elizabethan features, including decorative panelling and plasterwork, heraldic glass and a magnificent long gallery. It is now owned by the National Trust and used as an outpost by the National Portrait Gallery. The gardens were laid out at the same time as the house and feature two charming Elizabethan pavilions, a Victorian orangery and a restaurant in the stables.
