Old Town lies on the south side of St. Mary’s, about half a mile from Hugh Town, the main settlement. Here can be found Old Town church, It is a long established church with the date 1662 carved over one door, although refurbished in 1891. Among the more interesting memorials is one commemorating the loss of over 300 lives in the wreck of the German liner “Schiller” in 1875. Also here is the simple grave of Harold Wilson, the Labour Prime Minister 1964-70 and 1974-76 who loved these islands.
