Within the Exmoor National Park, many of the old mediaeval packhorse bridges remain. These were built to ensure the safe passage of goods carried by pack animals across the various rivers encountered. One of the best known is that at Allerford, 4 miles west of Minehead and visible from the main A39; this is unusually a two-arch span built to bridge Aller Water, a tributary of Horner Water.
