Pont Pill
Fowey, Cornwall - England, UK
  Share Location Map
Pont Pill is a tidal river that slushes through a secluded forest valley to a tiny port. Once a busy trading route, today the river is only navigable at high tide for about a mile and a half, by small boat. This is the best way to see the Heron, Curlew and other wading birds that live here. Alternatively, try the Hall Walk, which loops around Pont Pill to Polruan. The river is rumoured to be the inspiration for Wind in the Willows.

This lovely tidal creek is the perfect escape from the busy waters of the Fowey Estuary, which flows into it. It's so quiet here, it really feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. The area is owned by the National Trust so it is well signposted and maintained, and teeming with wildlife. The bluebells were flowering when we were there! I think you can hire canoes in Fowey or join an organized trip up the creek. If you're walking, the best views of Pont Pill are from Hall Walk just before it reaches Polruan. - GG
