The town of Wiveliscombe purchased the land on which the recreation ground stands, as a memorial to those killed in the First World War. A monument, built of stone, now stands here and the Froud Hancock Memorial shelter was also erected in 1934. The recreation ground today is a hive of sporting activity, being a centre for football, rugby, cricket, and tennis clubs. An open air swimming pool, opened in 1927 is another of the ground’s popular facilities.
