King Alfred the Great founded Shaftesbury Abbey as a Benedictine nunnery in 880AD. It stood for many hundreds of years as one of the most significant buildings in the region and acted as a catalyst for prosperity for the town and its people. This excellent museum is situated close to the excavated site where the remains of the abbey are found and contains a great many artefacts and related documents that bring to life the story of the building.
