Bishop Roger of Salisbury built Sherborne Old Castle in the 12th Century to act as a strongly defended palace. During the English Civil War, the castle became a strong base of resistance for the Royalists. During an eleven-day siege in 1645, the castle was destroyed, and today only remains are left in this beautiful area of countryside. Visitors can learn more about the castle and its history here at the site.

As you walk around the battered ruins of this castle you read the highly informative information boards erected by English Heritage. These tell the story of this 12th Century stronghold and its epic battle against Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War. I read with interest that the strong walls lasted 16 days of constant attack before they finally succumbed. This place is atmospheric and historic, a great day out.
