Bishop Roger of Salisbury built Sherborne Old Castle in the 12th Century to act as a strongly defended palace. During the English Civil War, the castle became a strong base of resistance for the Royalists. During an eleven-day siege in 1645, the castle was destroyed, and today only remains are left in this beautiful area of countryside.
