Smeaton’s Tower is one of Plymouth’s most famous landmarks. Originally built fourteen miles out at sea, Smeaton’s Tower now stands on Plymouth Hoe, restored and open to visitors. The first lights were lit in the lighthouse in 1759, and for 120 years it endured the harsh seas and protected the lives of sailors. When cracks were found in the foundations of the construction in the 1870s, the lighthouse was disassembled brick by brick and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe, where it stands to this day overlooking Plymouth Sound.
