Lady Emily Smyth of Ashton Court gave thought to the needs of the local poor. She had this row of eight almshouses built in 1900-02. She commissioned the design from Edward Gabriel of Bristol, noted for his work in the Arts and Crafts style. Here he conjures up the charm of Elizabethan almshouses. The central gable bears the Smyth arms and an inscription which reads: "Rest after toil, peace after stormy seas, doth greatly please."
