Plymouth’s medieval parish church is the largest in Devon. The wealthy merchants of the thriving port poured money into its rebuilding in the 15th century. The 136-foot tower was paid for by Thomas Yogge. When Plymouth suffered heavy bombing in 1941, the church was burnt out. The next morning someone placed a wooden board over the north door. On it was the word Resurgam meaning "I will arise again". And indeed St Andrew’s was rebuilt after the war. Resurgam was carved in stone above the doorway.
