St Catherine’s Castle is located on the coast, close to Fowey Harbour in Cornwall. It is one of several small defensive forts that were commissioned along the southern coastline of England by Henry VIII in the 16th Century to protect against sea born attacks from France and Spain. A two-storey building, the fort has gun ports on the ground level. It is maintained in association with English Heritage.

The walk to St Catherine's Point, where this artillery fort stands, is worth doing just for the views alone, which are spectacular. From here you can see right across the Fowey Estuary. The Fort is quite interesting too, reflecting centuries of military fort design, apparently. The footpath from Fowey is only about a mile, but it does climb quite steeply up to St Catherine’s Point. Alternatively, you can park at the National Trust car park at Coombe Farm and walk from there. - FoweyFan
