St Catherine’s was probably a pilgrim chapel. Built in the 15th Century as part of Abbotsbury Abbey. It is all that remains of the original monastic building. The chapel has a massive stone, barrel-vaulted roof and a tiny oratory in the turret. The local landmark stands 250 feet on a hill and can be reached from a pathway off Chapel Lane. St Catherine is the patron saint of spinsters and legend says that once local girls climbed to the chapel to recite poetry in the hope of securing husbands.
