The oldest parts of St James Church are early 14th Century and there are fragments of 15th Century glass in the West end. The beautiful eight-panelled font is also 15th Century and depicts the figures of Christ and many saints, identified by their symbols. The 20th Century carved screen is based on the original rood screen now kept in the County Museum. Apparently, if you stand near the church’s entrance when the bells are being rung, the creaking sound you’ll hear is the tower rocking!
