St Mary’s, begun in the early 14th Century, is Taunton’s town church and the largest parish church in Somerset. The tower was described by Simon Jenkins as ‘the finest in England’, and the church’s interior is just as impressive. Look up at the chancel and nave Tudor ceiling to see a hundred or so gilded angels. The West window is simply beautiful and there are fragments of medieval glass in rich colours on the North side. The church seats 800 people, and has its own bookshop and coffee shop.
