A church was first mentioned in Bishops Lydeard in 1239 but the present church was constructed around 1470 and restored by the Victorians in 1860. One of St Mary’s finest features is the screen, which is 16th Century and complete. There is some lovely Jacobean carving on the bench ends and pulpit and the Royal charter from Edward I can be seen at the back of the church. Outside is a 14th Century preaching cross and nearby is the remains of a village cross, which was moved from another village site in the 19th Century.
