St Peter’s in Portishead dates from the 14th Century though the high Somerset Tower was erected in 1450. The church has a Norman carved font and an excellent stone pulpit, which is dated around 1600. Outside, near the priest’s door you’ll see lines scratched onto the wall; the marks of a Mass Dial – an ancient sundial. Percival Halliwell, who died during the Blue Bird speed trials on Lake Windermere in 1930, is buried here, and so too is the family of Fred Weatherly. Weatherly wrote the lyrics to ‘Danny Boy’.
