Stephen Reynolds was an interesting local character. He was born in Devizes and educated at the University of Manchester in the early 20th Century. When he moved to Sidmouth he was fast becoming one of the better known authors of his time. He loved his house close to the sea and quickly became one of the great advocates of unionisation in the fishing industry, earning the affectionate nickname of 'fisherman's friend'.
