The Tamar Bridge is the main road bridge between Devon and Cornwall; it crosses the River Tamar between Plymouth and Saltash. Queen Elizabeth II opened the bridge to traffic in 1961, at which time it was the longest suspension bridge in the UK. Strengthening and widening work took place from 1999 to 2001, to enable the bridge to meet new European directives. This work meant that the Tamar Bridge was the first bridge in the world to be widened while it remained open to traffic.
