An old almshouse has been imaginatively converted into a bistro. The town’s merchant guild founded an almshouse here in 1480. The opening of the Axbridge Union Workhouse made the almshouse redundant in Victorian times. It lay derelict for years until it was restored in 1983. What you see today is a mixture of old and new. The beams and braces of the 16th-century roof are open to view. Simple fireplaces and a garderobe show how medieval almsfolk lived.
