Towering over the town skyline and one of Ashburton’s oldest buildings, the Chapel of St Lawrence started its life as a private place of worship for the Bishop of Exeter. Given to the Town in 1314 by lord of the manor Bishop Stapledon, the Chapel evolved into a Grammar School, which closed in 1938. It once housed the town museum as well as the library for over forty years. The Guild of St Lawrence in partnership with the Dartmoor National Park Authority ensures it’s continued use as a Heritage Centre throughout the summer season.
