The Fleet, caught between the sea and the shingle bank of Chesil beach, is the largest tidal lagoon of its kind in Britain. The stretch of water is home to sea anemones, cockles, sponges, at least 25 species of fish and the large bird population that feeds on them. World War II saw the Fleet used for trials of Dr Barnes Wallis’ bouncing bomb, celebrated in the film The Dambusters. The old chapel at East Fleet was immortalised in Moonfleet, John Meade Falkner’s classic smuggling tale.
