The remotest and bleakest part of Exmoor is “the Chains”, a high plateau straddling the Somerset/Devon border to the west of Simonsbath. The Long Stone is a 9 foot high prehistoric stone in the centre of this area. Its precise purpose is not known; speculation has suggested a marker at the junction of ancient tracks or for use at the summer solstice. It can be reached using the footpath from Pinkery Farm gate, halfway between Simonsbath and Challacombe or from the village of Challacombe itself.
