The two foundation stones of the cathedral were laid in 1880, four years after the Cornish Diocese of Truro was formed. The first section was consecrated in 1887 and the towers finally completed in 1910. The beautiful Gothic Revival building neatly incorporates part of the sixteenth-century parish church of St Mary within its structure, which is also noted for its copper spire and the non-aligned nave and chancel. The cathedral soars above the town and dominates views from the surrounding hills. A 15-year restoration programme started in 2004.
