This peaceful enclave was built in the 14th century as the College of the Vicars Choral of Wells Cathedral. The terraces on either side contained simple lodgings with a living room on the ground floor and bedroom above. Almost all have since been combined into larger houses, but No 22 has been restored to its original form. The close is entered through a massive arched gateway, which incorporates the vicars' dining room and kitchen. At the far end of the close is their former chapel.
