This historic pub stands on the site of the gatehouse of St James Priory. Its vaulted cellars apparently date to the medieval period. The inn was first granted a license in 1672, but has been much altered. It was refronted in the 19th century. The white hart was the emblem of Richard II. It became so popular as an inn sign in his reign that many later inns and taverns adopted it as a well-known sign.
