Inchmarnoch is a small island with a fascinating history which lies off the west coast of Bute. Despite measuring only 4km x 1km it was well known as an ecclesiastical centre from the 7th century thanks to the arrival of the Irish St. Marnoch, one of the early missionaries who brought Christianity to Scotland. Remains of a medieval church (built on the site of the saint’s chapel) can be seen at Midpark, in the centre of the island. A ferry service runs to the island, which is run as an organic farm today.
