Iona Abbey is one of the major targets for Christian pilgrimages and a centre of Celtic worship tradition within the UK. The Abbey was founded by St. Columba and a group of Irish monks in 563 AD. It was restored in the 19th Century and, in 1938, the Iona Community was formed which is world-famous for its contribution to contemplative worship and music. To reach the Abbey, you need to go on a rather involved journey by ferry from Oban to Mull and then by ferry from Fionnphort on the opposite side of the island to Iona itself.
