This museum was established in 1983 by Comhairle nan Eilean, the Western Isles Council, to provide the first professional museum for the region. The museum moved from Stornoway Town Hall to its present location in the Nicholson Institute in 1995. The museum holds an extensive photographic archive of the area, as well as displays dedicated to maritime history, archaeology and social history.
