The Islay Museums Trust was founded in 1976 and immediately decided that it should protect and preserve the rapidly dilapidating collection of artefacts that it had inherited. The museum holds around two thousand pieces in its collection that date from the Mesolithic age to recent times. Pieces on display include tools used by a range of local tradesmen, kitchenware, hunting equipment and a small library.
