In the eighteenth Century, Portree harbour was the scene of many anguished departures for the people of Skye forced to emigrate to North America because of poverty and overpopulation. Today, the harbour is a tourist attraction in its own right and its colourful row of houses along the waterfront is a favourite of photographers. As a magnet for tourists, it’s perfect for watching the boats come in and for admiring the Skye sunsets. It’s also a busy working harbour used by fishing boats and pleasure craft.
