Rothesay Castle is one of Scotland’s oldest castles; it sits in the centre of Rothesay, and was built in a circular design in the 13th century by the Stewart kings, although it is claimed that a castle has been here since 1098, built by the Viking Magnus Barelegs. Surrounded by a moat and built on a mound (or motte), Rothesay Castle has undergone a chequered and interesting history, having been attacked by Norsemen, Roundheads and Argyll Highlanders over the centuries.
